Week of April 20, 2009

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Please note that we are now in the 3rd week of the 4th quarter of school. It is extremely important that your child comes to school on time everyday, and is prepared to work. There are several assignments and homework that have been entered in gradebook already. Please use your username and password to view what your child has received so far this quarter. If you happen to see a “M” in any field, that means your child has a missing assignment. If they do not complete it within a timely matter, they will receive a “zero” and this will lower their average. If you are having difficulty logging on to view gradebook, please contact me or someone in the office (preferably Mr. Dunlap). Someone will assist you with Parent Portal.

Please view the Travel Agency research project that the children are working on. They have weekly assignments to prepare them for May 15th - Presentation Day. Again, this should be an exciting and fulfilling project for them as well as yourself.

If you have questions about anything, please e-mail me at: megoosby@cps.edu

Thanks again for your continued support,

Ms. Goosby

We will begin reading this book, Elijah of Buxton, by Christopher Paul Curtis. This will be our third chapter book by Mr. Curtis. We will conclude by doing an Author’s Study on Christopher Paul Curtis and his art of writing.

I am asking all students to have a copy of this book no later than Tuesday, March 17, 2009. It is imperative that each student has his/her copy no later than Tuesday. They will loose participation points if they are not prepared.

Students may retrieve the book from the library, Border’s, or even 57th Book Seminary Bookstore. It should be not more $6.99 plus tax.

Week of March 9, 2009

We are finishing the book The Watsons Go to Birmingham this week. This has been a very fun and informative book because we have completed several engaging activities that explained the Civil Rights era of the 1960’s. The students began this book by completing a KWL chart, which asked the students to tell what they already know about the Civil Rights era, what they want to know and finally this week we will discuss what the students have actually learned about the 1960’s. The Watson’s Go to Birmingham is the second book we’ve read as a class by the author Christopher Paul Curtis. In the near future we will compare and contrast this authors books and writing style since the students have become very familar with his writing style and characters.

In Science, we’ve been studying the Solar System and the students learned a great way of remembering the planets in the order in which they exist from the Sun. The students are able to easily remember the phrase My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos. If the students remember this phrase they will know that the M in the word My stands for Mars, the V in Very stands for Venus, and so on. As a culminating activity of our studying of the solar system, the students have completed a project which asked that each student picked a planet in our Solar System and describe some characteristics of this planet while comparing it to at least one other planet.  THIS PROJECT IS DUE MARCH 6, 2009. IT IS 20% OF THEIR SCIENCE GRADE. PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOUR CHILD HAS TURNED IN THIS PROJECT.

Currently in Science we are studying the Water Cycle and Weather. Students have been given a  project in which they are to pick a severe weather pattern (Tornado, hurricane, ect.) and give some information about this storm, where in the United States does the storm most frequently occur ect. Students are to also make a storm safety procedure for their homes and list some items they will need to have on hand in case a storm were to happen. THIS PROJECT IS DUE MARCH 13, 2009. IT IS 20% OF THEIR SCIENCE GRADE. PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOUR CHILD HAS TURNED IN THIS PROJECT.

Week of February 23, 2009 - “Pre-ISAT Week”

Parents/Guardian/Students,

We are quickly approaching the ISAT standardized assessment. This testing series will be for the next two weeks. The first day of testing will be March 3rd. Make sure your child gets at least 8 hours of sleep. They should have a healthy breakfast ( ex. oatmeal, eggs & bacon with toast, etc.). Children should be relaxed and calm before testing. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE get your child to school on time everyday. If they are absent for any part of the test, they will be asked to test in another area of the school; therefore, they will not be able to view the charts for the test that we have created throughout the school year.

Please make sure that the children are reading everynight for at least 30 minutes, asking questions as they are reading, as well as the parents reviewing any and every homework assignment given by all teachers. Make sure you are reviewing their work before you initial anything. We are to work together as a TEAM.

I have forwarded the students Study Island reports to every “parent e-mail” address I have on record. If you would like for me to send you your child’s report, please forward to me your e-mail address. It will update you everytime your child has completed a lesson.

I have noticed that students are not taking advantage of the Study Island program regularly. This is a great help in ensuring that your child is ready and prepared for this standardized assessment. The students should have completed every standard in Reading, Math and Science with at least an 85% average. They can always retake the lesson later. Please remind students to first read each lesson before attempting to test. They should be testing on at least 10 questions, no less!!!

At Bret Harte, we have quite a few on-line tools to assist the children in excelling. Please make sure your child is using every component we have to their best effort. Things will only get better - if they apply themselves.

Please respond to any blog posted. I welcome your input and concerns.

Sincerely,

Ms. Goosby
